Sinds we thuis een platenspeler hebben, loopt onze LP collectie een beetje uit de hand. Het leuke hieraan is dat ik oude muziek ontdek, die ik anders waarschijnlijk nooit gehoord zou hebben. De mooiste muzikale ontdekking van de maand deel ik graag met jullie.
Het album “Alarm Clock” van Richie Havens. Ik wist niet goed wat ik moest verwachten, door de cover dacht ik eigenlijk dat het een soort Indiase Sitar muziek was. Het bleek een soul / rythm and blues te zijn. Wild tokkelend op zijn gitaar zingt meneer Havens met zijn mooie stem liedjes die mij, ik gok 40 jaar nadat ze zijn opgenomen, raken.
Richie Havens brak door nadat hij in ’69 optrad tijdens Woodstock. Vanwege de vertragingen van de aankomst van de andere artiesten, bleef Havens doorspelen totdat hij afgelost kon worden (het optreden duurde alles samen drie uur). Op het moment dat al zijn nummers al gespeeld waren, besloot hij een improvisatie te spelen op het nummer “Motherless child’, waarin hij het woord freedom keer op keer herhaalde.
